The last MGB convertible rolled off the production line at the Abingdon factory on the 22nd of October and it ended an era of sports car motoring, not only of the MGB but also of MG sports cars in general. The MGB, although launched in , continued in production in similar form, right the way through to the end of its production. During this span of 18 years continuous production, the basic body shape remained the same, apart from the later models sporting impact resistant black bumpers front and rear from onwards. There were obvious mechanical and cosmetic improvements made to the MGB during its life and these are dealt with in more detail further on.

MGA Chassis (VIN), Engine & Body Numbers
It has also been reprinted in Dutch and appeared in an article there. All of this relates in one way or another to the relationship between the three primary serial numbers found on an MGA: the Chassis Number, Engine Number, and Body Number. Apparently, Abingdon did not bother to help us out by keeping track of any number other than the VIN. So how do we determine the association between the three? When I finally set myself to this task, it turned out to be rather more difficult than I had imagined.
Most of the castings used for blocks and cylinder heads had date stamps as well that indicated when the casting was produced. This is slightly different from the engine code as the engine code appears to show the date of assemble. With this information in mind I decided to try and figure out a little of the history for my GT.

MGB Vehicle Information
The Commission Number is stamped on a plate secured to the bonnet lock platform. The Gearbox Number is stamped on top of the gearbox casing adjacent to the dipstick. The VIN for the later MGB , approximately to , may be found stamped on a plate secured to the left hand door post, and on a plate secured to the top of the dashboard. Additionally when ordering engine parts you will also need to know the engine number.
