All Bash Bits can be found using this link. A long long time ago one of my co-workers showed me an option to find which removes all the files the find command found. Let's say I would want to remove all. If it found files, a list of them will be printed to the console. After checking the list, I would append the command to remove all found results:.

That would, for every file, run the command rm filename;. This is a lot of typing and depending on the shell you might need to escape characters like here. Just now I was looking to remove all empty directories and found on the find manpage that it nowdays has a -delete flag.

Which makes the above command easier:. The -delete flag will perform better since it doesn't have to spawn an external rm process for every file. Some embedded linux systems or UNIX systems therefore might also not have the delete flag.

The manpage has more information including a warning:. Delete files; true if removal succeeded. If the removal failed, an error message is issued. If -delete fails, find's exit status will be nonzero when it eventually exits. Use of -delete automatically turns on the '-depth' option.

Warnings: Don't forget that the find command line is evaluated as an expression, so putting -delete first will make find try to delete everything below the starting points you specified. When testing a find command line that you later intend to use with -delete, you should explicitly specify -depth in order to avoid later surprises. Table of Contents find -delete flag. After checking the list, I would append the command to remove all found results: find. Which makes the above command easier: find.

Pay attention to the section number: Suppose you want help on printf. The bash version of printf is in section 1, the C version is in section 3 or 3C. If you don't know which one you want, type man -a printf , and all manual pages will be displayed. You may find something like formats 5 , which suggests you to type man 5 formats. If you are annoyed that man printf gives you printf 1 and all you want is printf 3 , you have to change the order of scanned directories in the MANPATH environment variable and put the ones for C language before the ones for shell commands. This gives you a summary of commands of requested section. Last but not least: information delivered in man pages is not redundant, so read carefully from beginning to end for increasing your chances to find what you need. Manual pages are the canonical type of documentation for Unix systems. They are a bit arcane, but for a technology several decades old, they've held up quite well. The arcane bit is the markup language. This is a brief tutorial on writing good manual pages, at least for the typical cases.

On Unix-like operating systems, the find command searches for files and directories in a file system. Within each directory tree specified by the given path s, it evaluates the given expression from left to right, according to the rules of precedence see " Operators ", below until the outcome is known. At that point find moves on to the next path until all path s have been searched. It can be used on its own to locate files, or in conjunction with other programs to perform operations on those files.
